Naxos is not only a fantastic island for holidays. It is also a great destination for sports as it offers many chances to experience various kind of activities. Two very popular activities in Naxos are windsurfing and kitesurfing that can actually be practiced in many spots on the western side of the island. In fact, the fantastic beach of Mikri Vigla that is found only few steps from our Naxos accommodation is considered as the best spot for kitesurfing in Naxos.
Why kitesurfing in Mikri Vigla?
The beach of Mikri Vigla is naturally divided in two bays: the northern and the southern. The northern bay of Mikri Vigla is a very popular spot for windsurfing and, especially, kitesurfing in Naxos. Off the bay is the small islet of Panagia Parthena and the strait between the coast of Mikri Vigla and this islet attracts many kitesurfers every summer.
Specific geological characterists in this sea region have made the spot of Naxos and the neighboring spots in Paros island ideal for kitesurfing. In July and August, the wind is blowing almost every day, coming from the North and North East and heading parallel to the beach. This wind is called meltemi in Greek and has a constant intensity of 15/20 knots with peak at 30 knots.
Due to the close proximity with Paros island, the waves are not high, making Mikri Vigla an ideal spot for all levels. The wind starts from midday until late in the afternoon.
Other spots for kitesurfing in Naxos
In general, the entire western side of the island is ideal for kitesurfing in Naxos. Starting from Laguna, the closest spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing to Naxos Town, nice places for these two sports are also Agios Prokopios and Plaka. In these two beaches, there are centers that offer courses for all levels and rent the necessary equipment for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Naxos. These are two adrenaline activities that can be practiced by all ages, even children.
